Oscars Best Dressed

Mar 14 ’23

There are few red carpets that gain as much airtime as the Oscars. Indeed, awards season is a time of great joy for many a fashion lover, but it seems the Academy Awards and their champagne carpet (ahem) transcends even the most ardent of fashion followers and captures the interest of the wider public too. Perhaps only the first Monday in May can compete?

The 2023 ceremony was - like most things in the 2023 fashion world thus far - refreshing. Red carpets have become all too consumed by breaking the Internet and looks becoming meme-worthy, seemingly ring-lead by the Met Gala. But, by contrast, the 2023 Oscars were mostly about elegance and the simplicity of looking good. Below are our favourite looks from yesterday's ceremony...

Best Bridal | The Oscars were awash with bridal-themed looks this year with metres of tulles and lots of glittering creams. Emily Blunt's Valentino was a minimalist dream.

Lady Gaga - Versace

Best Finger On The Pulse | Lady Gaga not only surprised with her pared-back look (but really, leave it to none other to stage a relative make under) but illustrated her fashion credentials by wearing a Versace gown seen on the runway only days before. Top marks on both fronts.

Most Successful Trend-follower | Velvet featured heavily on the runways of the last fashion month, and leave it to Cate Blanchett, she of unparalleled elegance, to wear it first. Shes wearing sustainable Louis Vuitton and we love it.

Sandra Oh - Giambattista Valli Couture

Best Colour | Sunset Grecian isn't usually a theme we would subscribe to but honestly, Sandra Oh in Giambattista Valli Couture is all sorts of fabulous and we are most certainly here for it.

Best Old School | It's like she googled 'red carpet' and took the first option. Incredibly obvious (leg, asymmetry, subtle drama) but Cara Delevigne is nailing it in Elie Saab who unsurprisingly is the King of the red carpet.

Vanessa Hudgens - Chanel

Best Chanel | Chanel can be touch and go when it comes to the red carpet (have you seen the Instagram accounts dedicated to Margot Robbie's tie-up with the revered fashion house!?) but Vanessa Hudgens is polished and awesome.

Best Everything | The Jason Wu dress Danai Gurira was all sorted of perfection, subtly interesting and impeccably cut. She paired it with a hairstyle she described as an ode to African women. Top points.

Alton Mason - Tom Ford

Best Dressed Man | It might not be entirely appropriate for the Oscars, but there is no denying Alton Mason's Tom Ford suit is cut to within an inch of its life and surely has redefined tailoring goals the world over.
