Rodelle On: The French Flair

It’s true – I am obsessed by French women’s style! With country heroines such as Coco Chanel, Brigitte Bardot and singer Lou Doillon, these truly stylish women say no to trends and have developed their own signature style.

So, you say, how do they do that? Well to help out I have compiled a set of basic rules that every French women follows in their wardrobe brining the French flair to the Bay – and no it doesn’t include wearing active wear ALL Day!

RULE 1)

Less is more:

No saying could be truer when it comes to Parisian dressing. Focus on interesting shapes and textures, keep colours neutral (add colour in your accessories) and stay away from anything too embellished, short and flouncy.

RULE 2)

The leather jacket:

This is the Parisian women’s signature item – a leather jacket. Whether it’s a classic bomber style, or

an edgy biker jacket this can be worn casually with jeans or dressy over tailored pants or a dress this is an absolute wardrobe staple!

Rule 3)

The Cardigan

French women love a cardigan and this is nothing like this wardrobe staple to carry you from autumn through till spring. There are many different styles such as the long, slouchy boyfriend style, which I tend to favour to the shorter, thick knit cosy styles or the finer knit cropped crew cardi. Choose them in basic colours such as black, grey, cream and navy as these will go everything or for the more daring add a splash of colour such as yellow or pink.

And if the budget stretches a cashmere cardigan is a fantastic investment. If you are ready to take good care of your sweaters they'll last forever.

RULE 4)
The Shirt

French women love shirts! Whether it’s a crisp white blouse or a perfectly tailored black shirt invest in a great quality one in silk or cotton is a timeless investment that will take you can easily dress up or down and gives your outfit an effortless, elegant look – just like the French!

RULE 5)

The Pant:

Leave your tracksuits and lycra at home when walking around the streets of Paris (unless you are running to a gym class). Instead don a pair of nicely fitted crop pants. These are comfortable, stylish and will suit going out for brunch, shopping or even just soaking up the sights – at least in a pair of great tailored pants you will be doing this in style!

RULE 6)

Boots and flats

You might be under the illusion that you need to wear heels to resemble stylish Parisians but the truth is flat shoes are a Parisienne best friend. Opt for ankle boots, a classic ballet flat or stylish brogue. Not only will you blend in with the Frenchies, your feet won’t kill you at the end of the day!

RULE 7)

The Breton Stripe

As clique as this might sounds a striped shirt or t-shirt looks effortlessly cool. Wear with a pair of dark skinny’s and flats for weekend wear or for a more fashion forward option team back with a floral or printed skirt.

And finally the most important thing to remember and something that the French women have mastered – dress for yourself and only yourself! Dress to make yourself feel good not too show off and you will have mastered the French style with our own kiwi twist!
